Eight’s a charm for the Little Master

June 02, 2016
YMGCR’s 2016 Club Championships concluded last Sunday with Jay-Ar Martin adding an eighth title to his overflowing collection.

Four brilliant rounds of 75, 64, 75 and 69 for a five under par total of 283 saw him salute the judge fourteen strokes clear of Vagg Shield winner Troy Robertson.
On Sunday with a large crowd of members in attendance, Jay-Ar turned one under the card on the front nine of the Lake course and birdied the 10th before treating spectators to a free masterclass with an amazing par save from the right hand side of the treacherous 12th green.
Further birdies, following exquisite iron shots at the 13th, 14th and 18th then sealed the deal for the modest champion.
Veterans champ Andrew Baird spoke to golf notes after the final round and said, “What a performance by Jay-Ar, he’s been in terrific form for a long time now and to win the champs on top of his outstanding unbeaten pennant season caps off a sensational year for him”.
“It was a pleasure for me to play with him over the last two days and watch him go about his work.”
At presentations afterwards Jay-Ar thanked his family and friends for their well wishes. “With the support of Joy and Kerth and Mum and Dad, I have been able to put some time into my game and today’s result is testament to their help and encouragement of me and my golf,” he said.
Golf notes congratulates Jay-Ar on his magnificent victory and all competitors who participated in the premier event on our golfing calendar.
In other championship news, NEDGA Pennant Captain Jordan Bovalina has followed in older brother Caleb’s footsteps by adding his name to the YMGCR Junior Championship honour board following his nine stroke victory.
Well done also to Ben Casley and Baxter Droop on finishing second and third respectively.
Congratulations also to Trevor Reed who saluted in B grade by a comfortable margin with last year’s runner-up Corny Boers again relegated to a second place finish.
Fantastic performances as well by Ian Cooper and Ian Cumming in taking out the C and D grade titles respectively.
Coop’s win left Ian Davis in the runner up position while young pennant star Baxter Droop, playing in his first club champs, was only two strokes behind the winner.
Speaking of young, congratulations to ‘Young Vet’ Andrew Baird and back to back winner Rob Board for their successes in the Vets and Super Vets sections of our champs. Well done also to Kerry Parker and Jim Colla in finishing a close pair of runners up.
Finally, well done to all winners in the 2016 Club Championships, and a special thank you to Chris Burgess and his staff on the wonderful presentation of our golf courses.
