Huge numbers for May Tournament

by
May 18, 2016
Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort welcomed 800 plus entries from golfers representing more than 70 clubs from Victoria and interstate for the Annual May Tournament.

Despite rain falling, both courses were presented beautifully thanks to Superintendent Chris Burgess and his hardworking staff.

Round of the week went to long time visitor John McCulloch from the Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne with a brilliant score of +7 in the men’s Par comp on Friday.

Congratulations and thank you to Evan Droop and his staff, in particular Trent Wood, for the organisation and coordination of the week’s events.
Thanks also to the starters and volunteers for making the week another outstanding success.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” Div 2 pennant winning captain Ian Cooksey said.
“We’ve punched above our weight all season and today’s win is a great reward for my guys who never once threw in the towel,” Ian said.

Jubilee specialist Brendan Hennessey steadied the ship with a win on the last hole leaving Chiltern 2/1 up with two matches going overtime.

It was left to Steve Buckley to secure a memorable win for his team after his opponents putt for a half on the 20th hole slipped past the cup.

The Div 1 lads succumbed 3/2 to the unbeaten Wodonga side in the final contest of the season.

Captain Steve Campion said, “We gave it our best today, but they were too strong for us and thoroughly deserved their victory”.

A brilliant runner-up result at the prestigious Southern PGA Trainee Championships was Adam Burdett’s reward after four testing rounds of the Captain’s Course at Tocumwal last week.

Highlighted by a tournament best of 5 under par 67 in the second round, Adam’s total of 282 left him five strokes behind the extremely talented West Australian, Brody Martin from the Marangaroo golf club.

2015 Pennant Player of the Year Troy Robertson leads this year’s championship field after shooting a wonderful par round of 72 on the Murray course last Saturday.

With Dean Tipping and Jay-Ar Martin two and three shots back respectively, the race is wide open to find the 2016 winner.

The evergreen Trevor Reed leads defending champ Tim Cooper by a couple in B grade with a host of contenders snapping at their heels.

Congratulations to Ian Cooper, with a big lead in C grade with daylight a clear second, while Ian Cumming sits on top in D grade with Baxter Droop and past President Lou Bozzola lurking ominously.

Further Championship updates after the second round next week.
Finally, don’t miss the long running Thomson Bus Lines Day & Dinner hosted by Adam Thomson next Sunday.

A round of mixed 4BBB stableford will be followed by a scrumptious meal served in the comfort of the Willow Room.

With a bus load of prizes up for grabs, enter on line or contact the pro shop for more details.

Upcoming Events: May 21 - 2nd Round Club Championships; May 22 - Thomson Bus Lines Golf Day and Dinner.
Good golfing to all.

NEDGA Pennant
The North East District Pennant Finals were held on Sunday in wonderful sunny conditions and on courses in excellent order.
At Jubilee, Wodonga won their first ever Division 1 Scratch District Pennant with a solid win over Yarrawonga.
Wodonga players looked to be in control of the match for most of the day with Captain Ross Hillary 4up over his counterpart, Steve Campion after 9 holes and No 1 Daniel Gill 3up over Richard Hogg.
Peter Warner was the only Yarrawonga player in control, leading Peter Miller.  Warner continued his good play to comfortably win 5/4 and Chris Burgess fought back to take his match against Ben Holland on the 18th.
However Hillary and Gill continued to hold out their opponents and both also won 5/4 while Bob Toal kicked away from Des Roome for an impressive 4/3 victory.
In Division 2 Scratch, Chiltern appeared to be slightly ahead at the half-way mark, leading in three matches.
Justin Gamble was 2up on Brendan Hennessy, while Casey Gamble and Jade Payne were both 1up on their opponents, Wayne Knowles and Kerry Parker.
Josh Hayes was struggling against Steve Buckley and Bill Daley (who produced the shot of the day by driving the 414m par 4 6th hole) was having a good tussle with Dave Crossley.
Daley was able to overcome Crossley, winning 2/1 and Casey Gamble held his form to also win 2/1.
However Parker and Hennessy fought back to win their matches, Parker going to the 21st hole.
Buckley and Hayes were all tied up after 18 holes and went into extra holes.
Buckley was finally able to get the upper hand on the 20th hole giving Yarrawonga their very close 3/2 victory.
At Yarrawonga, Benalla and Jubilee fought a great final.
With the match at two games all, the final match between Alex Reeves (Jubilee) and Oscar Bowditch (Benalla) went into sudden death after some excellent golf over the final few holes.
The standard remained high in the extra holes with Bowditch finally breaking through with a well constructed par on the difficult third hole of the Murray Course.
Benalla continue to impress at Junior level.
At Benalla, The Handicap Sections of Pennant took place.
In Section 1, pace setters Yackandandah, lead by the unbeaten Trevor Britton, had a comfortable 3.5/1.5 win over Myrtleford.
Daniel Galvin and Geoff Morris also won their matches while the only successful player for Myrtleford was Allan Jagoe.
Tarrawingee continued their incredible run of success in pennant with a big win over Wangaratta in Section 2, while Chiltern had heartache for a second year after they went down to Jubilee 3/2 in the Section 3 final.

YMGCR Ladies Golf
All the tournament results from last week will be entered for publication by Horrie Zontal however, many thanks to Dot Ringholt for entering the ladies results in my absence last week.
Three teams entered the Riverview Bowl at Cobram Barooga last Friday but unfortunately were unable to beat the local team of Cobram ladies.
I’m told conditions were difficult with the West course playing long.
Our best lady golfer on the day was Shirley Walsh.
With men’s championship underway and ladies 18 Hole Championship commencing Wednesday, May 18 it is pleasing to see we have 57 ladies entered for the three rounds.
Good luck and good golfing to all entrants; do the best you can but remember it is only a game so enjoy yourself out on the course and look forward to socialising and celebrating on completion.
