Hoppers go down to Bears

by
May 12, 2016
The Hoppers struggled all match against Tungamah at Tungamah on Saturday.

In many ways the big loss partly flattered the Hoppers as poor shooting for goal from a Bears team that had over 50 more inside 50 entries eased the level of pain.

It was the usual suspects of Fountain, Wolfe and Evans who stepped up and kept the Hoppers competitive, but getting the ball past half forward was a problem all day as Rennie were unable to run and spread and kept going down the line and having the ball returned from where it came.

Beavis, Kelly and Joe Ferguson kicked the Hoppers goals.

Awards: Woods Buslines - Jarryd Fountain, Andrew Goldman Excavations - Leon Wolfe, Lake Mulwala Bakery - Cato Evans, Cellarbrations - Josh Ritoli, Lake Mulwala Hotel - Sam Ferguson.

Reserves
The Ressies were in the game at quarter time but it all went pear-shaped from there.

Whippett Fitzpatrick got a trillion kicks and snagged two goals, Smithy was classy and Dodge Sugden played well throughout.

The highlight of the match for the Hoppers was Jack Kennedy’s running goal from deep in the right forward pocket in his first two’s match.

Awards: Bi Rite Electrical - Ben Fitzpatrick, Lake Mulwala Bakery - Adrian Smith, Lake Mulwala Hotel - Dustin Sugden, Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Resort - Jack Kennedy, Cellarbrations - Darren Kazazes.

Under 17s
This game saw Sam Ferguson play his 200th club game at the tender age of 16, a super effort.

The Thirds learnt that if you don’t play four quarters of footy and have a bad 10 minutes the game can get away from you.

Up by seven at quarter time, the Hoppers relaxed and the Bears kicked six goals to grab the ascendancy.

From there it was goal for goal, with Beavis, McCabe and Ryan being goal-kicking targets for the Hoppers, well supported by Kennedy on ball and Carlin who was outstanding in defence being first to the ball and following up with penetrating clearing kicks.
Well done to Fletcher Donovan for grabbing a goal.

In the end a four goal loss was admirable but could have been a lot better.

Awards: AXT Plumbing - Jack Kennedy, Wingates Sports - Brandon Carlin, Belmores Accounting - Alex Donovan, Mulwala Water Ski Club - Jack McMahon, O’Connors Machinery - Zane Chilcott, Lake Mulwala Bakery - Fletcher Donovan.

Under 14s
The smallest Hoppers were persistent but outsized and lost by 59 points.

The defence of Fletcher Donovan and Ben Coghill kept the pressure on all match well supported by Brock Wallace and Josh McInness in the ruck.

Coach Stephens was happy with the contest of his team but needs them to work on their polish delivering the ball into the forward line when encountering bigger opponents.

Awards: Ian and Pauline Ferguson - Fletcher Donovan, STF Engineering - Brock Wallace, Kennedy Builders - Ben Coghill, Coghill Electrical - Josh McInness, Redback Waste - Marcus Quinn, Lake Mulwala Bakery - Will Wallace, Rennie Catering Committee - Jack Forge.

Back home this week as the club takes on Katamatite in the Andrew Goldman Excavations Cup before having a week off.

Remember the Rennie Ball on June 25 with tickets available from Lisa Starr.
